Women's Reproductive Rights (2022)
Calla Shantz, 17, Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School
(coloured pencil and chalk pastel on paper)

This piece is about the social issue of women’s reproductive rights. To portray this I drew flowers in the shape of a vagina to demonstrate that this piece is about the women's reproductive system. I included specific flowers that either represent an important movement or women in my life who are important to me.

As for women's rights over their body, or lack thereof, I included a woman’s hand at the bottom of the page. I then drew the petals and flower dying/wilting as they drew closer to the hand. This is to demonstrate that a woman’s right to her own body wilts away and slips right through her fingers. I specifically drew the flower in the hand more low-key to signify that few have the right to their own body, and for those who do it is minimal and disappearing.
