The Bird in the City (2023)
Woorim Ko, 17, Waterloo Collegiate Institute
(acrylic on canvas)

The materials I used were paint. The medium was a canvas. I didn’t learn much from this assignment as I already knew how to paint and just applied it to the work. This work covers the subject of nature dwindling and being replaced with manmade structure and objects. The techniques I used for this piece was mostly the mixing of different colors and glazing by using thin layers of color. The main challenge was the time I was given for this project as I felt extremely rushed which caused me to make mistakes during the painting process. Most of what I had envisioned was included and I overall got a result that I wanted.

The dominant elements of this work are mostly shape, colour, and space. I drew and painted many different shapes and used space when I purposely had all the shapes cluttered all over the work to give a sense of chaos. I used colour to give the piece life and to mostly show what was going on. The dominant principles of this piece was emphasis and unity. The bird in the middle is the main focus of the piece as it is a way to convey the purity of nature by having it not painted. The unity comes when all the shapes and objects around the bird all come together to show the chaos that humans make. I really wouldn’t do anything different as I believe I got the result I wanted.
