Silenced But Not Forgotten (2022)
Name, age, school
(chalk pastel and graphite pencil)
I created this drawing about the social issue of police brutality against the black community because it's a very serious topic and one that isn’t anywhere close to being solved so it's very important to me. I used chalk pastels for the woman because I wanted to have a very detailed focal point and I find that charcoal is very easy to use when making detailed features because it's very easy to blend and shade certain elements. Because the pastel was so pigmented and it spread so easily it shaded into the background giving the piece an even more sad feeling. I used a pencil to write the names because I didn’t want to use anything too dark and take away the attention from the woman, but I wanted the names to still be clear because they're important people whose stories need to be heard.
